The upright line is the first line, and all forms and figures are nothing but the change of direction of that line, and as all is made by God and of God so by the upright line and of the upright line all forms are formed. The Vertical Line and the Horizontal LineThe messenger is pictured symbolically as a Cupid. He is meant to guide the longing soul toward its Divine Beloved, and this part of his work is symbolized as the vertical line. He is also used by Providence to bring together two souls in light who are seeking each other through darkness, some knowing and some not knowing what they are seeking after, which is represented by the horizontal line. The horizontal line and the vertical line together make a complete cross, which is the sign of Kemal, perfection.
